But even now I say that unless you want to prove that you can carry a film with your name, continuously trying to achieve box-office success is a dead end.”

They may be rich and famous but they said NO to certain film opportunities. Julia Roberts rejected Sharon Stone’s role in Basic Instinct. Al Pacino has rejected a number of now iconic roles. Among them, roles in Apocalypse Now, Star Wars, Kramer vs. Kramer, Pretty Woman and Crimson Tide. Johnny Depp was originally offered the role of Jack in Speed, but turned it down. The role was later given to Keanu Reeves. Daryl Hannah turned down the role of Vivian in Garry Marshall’s Pretty Woman because she thought it demeaning to women. When she passed, the role went to Julia Roberts.

Molly Ringwald turned down the lead role in Ghost that ultimately went to Demi Moore. When offered the lead in Gladiator, Mel Gibson turned it down.
