Christie’s auctioned off $68.6 million worth of post-war and contemporary art in London, led by “Silver Liz,” Andy Warhol’s shimmery portrait of actress Elizabeth Taylor. The 1963 silkscreen sold to an anonymous buyer for just over its low estimate of $10.1 million.  Silver Liz was painted in 1963, the year Taylor became the first actress to earn $1 million for a role. It has been in a private collection for 20 years and has not been seen in public.

Elizabeth Taylor was one of Warhol’s muses and he once said in an interview: “Ohhhh,  Elizabeth Taylor  ohhh. She’s so glamorous.”  Christie’s said that “Silver Liz” was one of only two Warhol portraits to show the actress with her famous violet eyes. The artist, who died in 1987, painted a series of 13 paintings of the Hollywood actress in 1963.

Elizabeth Taylor was truly beautiful.  She was a movie star who had talent.
